Multimap Interactive map of GB - type in a postcode or placename to get a map. Also has air photos for some areas (urban coverage is better than rural - note Tyne Valley now available). http://uk8.multimap.com/map/places.cgi

Get-a-map is a free internet mapping service provided by the Ordnance Survey, Britain's national mapping agency, in partnership with Multi Media Mapping, a "mapping solution provider". Improving all the time and 1:50,000 maps are now available. http://www.ordsvy.gov.uk

Streetmap An alternative to Multimap which has air photos for some areas (eg Edinburgh which Multimap doesn't have). Maps are OS in origin. Search by postcode, place or OS grid reference. http://www.streetmap.co.uk

Old-maps can be linked to from the OS site above. Old maps provides the first edition of the OS online (ie the original Victorian survey 1846 to 1899). If you want a high definition copy of the locus of your Great Grannie's heilan hame, you can order copies online. http://www.old-maps.co.uk

Neighbourhood statistics The Office of National Statistics has added OS maps to its popular neighbourhood statistics service. Type in a postcode or zoom in using maps. Neighbourhood Statistics say their "state-of-the-art Geographical Information System... provides new and improved search options which, for the first time, allow users to search specified areas which cross ward boundaries". http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk

The Environment Agency offers a postcode based service displaying your own 'backyard'. You can look up the polluters in a locality and get a map of the flood risk. http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk

Streetmap Street map of London to equal an A-Z; road-style atlas of the rest of UK. www.streetmap.co.uk
